Dating back to about 3000 BC, brooches started out as strictly functional items and had the main purpose of securing a piece of clothing. During this time period, brooches were long pins usually made from thorns, wood and pieces of flint. Flashforward a couple of decades later, brooches became more of an accessory and ornamental and the functionality slowly dissapeared.
The Victorian era marked massive socioeconomic changes in Great Britain which gave way to new jewelry styles and craft techniques. In the last phase of the Victorian era, people developed a slight obsession for everything that had to do with nature. The fascination with naturalism was a reaction to the negative sides of industrialization and technology. Many inhabitants of busy cities, moved away from overcrowded city districts and started to settle in rural and quiet places where they could reconnect with nature surrounded by botanical gardens.
The urge and longing for flora and fauna, inspired the artistic world in no time and jewelry were inspired by insects, animals, and flowers. This nature inspired brooch depicts a gracious butterfly and represents a typical design for that era. The combination of the white pearls against the warm gold skin of the butterfly makes it a true Victorian dream to wear this romantic brooch!
After seeing Bridgerton's Regé-Jean Page aka Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings wear a beautiful tripple pearl brooch while hosting SNL, our love for him and brooches have grown ;)
