Art deco Aquamarine brooch with old mine cut diamonds 18k white gold

The name Art deco comes from 1925’s Paris World Fair: Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, which in English translates to International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts. The art movements that shaped Art Deco were Cubism’s geometric shapes and the bright colors of Fauvism.

Fashion, in particular for women changed in the 1920 - 1930s. The Art Deco jewelry and fashion style was a scream for autonomy and recognition. The war ensured that men had to leave their jobs in order to fight in the war. Gradually more and more women entered the workforce and it brought women a sense of independence. In line with this, fashion had transformed from the relative formality and restriction of the Edwardian era and the war time years to fun and practical styles (think of the ever classy, feminine and unconventional Coco Chanel) that highlighted the freedom of modern women and allowed them to participate in activities that were previously for men only.

In terms of jewelry and jewelry styles during this period, many notice that square, oval, and rectangle shapes were popular and highly in demand during the art deco era. Sometimes a variety of geometric shapes were used together to create a complex piece with interesting lines. Often, these shapes have straight lines and angles, although curves are sometimes part of the design.

The diamonds in this brooch are set according to the à jour stone setting style. A'jour means 'open to daylight' in French. You may notice that the diamonds in this brooch are reflecting everybit of light that touches the diamonds, which makes it an incredible jewel to wear on fancy evenings :)
In the Art Deco era, diamonds were considered to be appropriate only for formal evenings such as dinners and soirées, many Art Deco jewelry include diamonds only in combination with other gemstones such as jade, coral, onyx and pearls. Pieces that contained diamonds and other kinds of gemstones ensured a more appropriate look for the daytime!
