Art Nouveau, ornamental style of art that flourished between about 1890 and 1910 throughout Europe and the United States. Art Nouveau is characterized by its use of a long, feminine and, organic lines and the jewelry from this era were often nature inspired, and showcasing detailed art work.

Art Nouveau is the result of a collective movement in reaction against the classicism in France of the time. Women found the collective voice to fight for more rights for themselves outside of the home by getting an education and a job. Together with this movement, became the increased fear, by society and men in particular, what the world would become if women won the equal rights. The fear could partly be explained by the nation’s loss in the Franco-German War in 1870, which was humiliating and left France feeling vulnerable and defeated. The idea of women leaving to work outside the home stoked fears of the birth rate dropping, leaving the country without enough men to support future armies. As a result, the female character became a principal figure in art, architectures, and jewelry.

This extraordinary pendant depicting an ornate floral drop is an example of a wonderful piece from the Art Nouveau era. This pendant has the sensual form that draws immediate attention to your collarbone and bust area, which is feminine, playful, and incredibly elegant!
